Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that involves significant mood swings, ranging from episodes of extreme highs (known as mania or hypomania) to periods of intense lows (known as depression). These shifts in mood can impact a person’s energy levels, activity levels and ability to think clearly.

During manic episodes, individuals may experience an elevated or irritable mood, increased self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts and engaging in risky behaviors. Hypomanic episodes are similar but less severe. On the other end of the spectrum, depressive episodes can lead to feelings of sadness, emptiness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep, and even thoughts of self-harm or suicide. It is important to note that bipolar disorder varies in severity and can have differing patterns of mood episodes.

Treatment of Bipolar disorder depends greatly on the severity of symptoms. Recommended treatments may include services such as medication, psychotherapy or a combination of both.
